School-Based Health Centers

The Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center also sponsors three school-based health centers in three separate zip codes in Central Brooklyn. These Programs were initiated in 2006 with support from local politicians; primarily former Councilman Albert Vann and District Leader Annette Robinson.

The School-Based Health Centers provides students with access to comprehensive health care during school hours. This prevents the need for students to miss school due to health issues that can be addressed by the school health center.

Services:

With the understanding that thousands of school-age children in New York City have limited access to comprehensive health services due to various barriers, BSFHC has succeeded in bringing primary care services to the place where children and youth are during the day in order to address critical health problems that make it difficult for students to learn. Services provided include:

  • Comprehensive physical health & mental assessments
  • Diagnosis & treatment of acute illnesses & chronic conditions
  • Screenings
  • Routine management of chronic diseases
  • Health education
  • Immunizations
  • Working papers & sports physicals
  • Population-based primary prevention
  • Referrals

Services are provided on site by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of a medical practitioner and a medical assistant in consultation with a physician. Presently, the SBHC Program staff is comprised of two physician assistants, one nurse practitioner, three medical assistants, one program coordinator and one clinical supervisor. One clinical provider and one medical assistant are assigned to each school.
